Bunny Love

Well the day has finally come, Ella's dream has come true. After asking and asking and asking (for 3 years) for a bunny, the day has arrived that we welcomed two bunny friends. Ella didn't think it was ever going to happen (lamenting "I'll NEVER get at bunny and I'm already six-and-a-half!"). Diamond and Groucho (names came with the bunny and the kids like them, although Ella has added Jewel and Felix has added Patrick) are a 2-year-old brother-sister bonded pair and were rescued and fostered by Linda of Redondo Beach Rabbit Rescue (don't worry - they are sterilized, so no baby bunnies in our future!). We have a lovely hutch for them, although they are allowed to hop around in the patio while we are home. They have been exploring their surroundings slowly and carefully; they are a little timid but love to cuddle and be petted. We've been feeding them two kinds of hay, as well as fresh veggies, including carrots, kale and dandelion greens from our garden (I hate dandelions!). It has been interesting seeing the cats react to their new housemates. Byron just hisses at them and stays away as much possible, Toots isn't particularly interested (she's a people-cat), and Otto isn't sure if he's supposed to play with them or attack but since they are at least twice as hefty as he is, he mostly just observes. Eventually he will probably either play with them or ignore them. MamaRose, who popped inside this morning, was the only one not afraid. She went right up to Diamond, they had a little nose-sniffing exchange and then she walked away. Diamond started hopping after her; maybe she thought MamaRose was a bunny also, since they have the same short stubby tail... We've been impressing upon Ella that it is her responsibility to take care of the buns, and she's taking it seriously. She and I take care of them together; I get to sweep the poops and wash off the removable floors and she dries the floor and gives them hay, food and water. She also has to pet them every day.

Anyway, without further delay, introducing our new friends, Diamond Jewel and Groucho Patrick!

Well, she's ALREADY six and a half... it's ABOUT TIME! :-D
She looks very happy. I assume Felix is just as happy. Let's hope they take their responsibilities as serious as they do now.
Are you working your way up to a zoo??
Enjoy your new pets.
Just a note: I am NOT their grandmother! I have four human grandchildren whom I love with all my heart and pets are not grandchildren.
Have fun! Lots of love.

oh, forgot to mention... what a "hutch"! more like a log cabin in the woods. What lucky bunnies they are. Have you removed the sofa from your Florida room? Otherwise there will be no room to walk in there.

Hi NIcole,
Just want you to know that I always check your blog and love reading about your family. I just don,t like writing comments. You always do such fun and interesting things with Ella and Felix. The rabbits are adorable. I think we will get one in September. Lots of love, we miss you .

Ha ha, I was going to say, you are developing a farm, not a zoo ;)

Maybe in the winter they can go outside, must be nicer than inside? Actually my friend Katy (UK) had a bunny as a pet, he was house trained and everything and hopped all around her apartment.

Bunnies are cute, Emile and Céline LOOOOVE them (esp. Céline). Hope Ella and Felix keep on enjoying them for a very long time - if looked after properly they can get really old; the one we take care of in the summer (our neighbors' across the street) is about 10 or 11 years old and still going strong!!! So with a bit of luck they should last Ella till she's about ready to go to veterinary school! ;)

ps. Don't forget about the digging tub so they can get their digging instincts fulfilled (can be filled with regular sand). The one our friends have is just a simple laundry tub, 30x30x20 or so.
